I’m a 5th generation Big Game Hunter in Colorado. The wording of 83 would protect “traditional methods” of hunting and trapping that have been banned in the state, such as wildlife killing contests, baiting bears with human food, the use of steel-jawed leghold traps and using hounds to hunt bears. I’m voting against “Right to Hunt” 83.”

Hunting and fishing are already legal in Colorado. Here is what 83 is actually about.

The “Right to Hunt” Constitutional Amendment is being pushed by out of state special interests who want to lock their “traditional methods” as the “preferred means” of wildlife management into our Constitution. Because traditional methods is undefined, it will open the door to lawsuits to roll back protections from trapping, baiting and snares. Their measure would weaken the rights of hunters and anglers who work hard to preserve ethical practices, remove valuable tools for scientists when drought or other issues that arise, and silence the voices of the more than 96 percent of Coloradans who public stakeholders. Hunting and Fishing are already protected in our State Statute, so ask yourself what they really are trying to do with this trojan horse of an amendment.

Hunters and anglers across Colorado oppose the proposed Right to Hunt Amendment because it threatens our Constitution and opens the door for out of state special interests to rewrite our wildlife laws.

Vote NO on the Right to Hunt and Fish. This measure would bring back cruel and unethical practices like leghold traps and hunting over bait.

Colorado ended these methods for a reason. They are indiscriminate, they harm non‑target wildlife, and they undermine the ethical standards that responsible hunters work hard to uphold. A constitutional amendment should strengthen ethical conservation, not reopen the door to outdated and inhumane tactics.
